New Additions to the ASET Staff

Many of you are familiar with the ASET Executive Office staff and if you are, you know that there has been several changes in the past couple of years. Most recently, ASET hired a new Executive Director, Kevin Helm and a new Marketing Manager, Aman Ayalew.

If you are not familiar, the ASET Executive Office staff is comprised of nine individuals. There are five staff members who are employed at the Executive Office in Kansas City, MO and four remote staff who live in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Illinois. The ASET staff play a vital role in your development as a Neurodiagnostic Technologist. They are just as dedicated to the profession and work everyday to promote the field and bring you new and intriguing educational offerings. The staff works closely with volunteers and the ASET Board of Trustees. They are committed to you as ASET members and Neurodiagnostic Technologists.

Over the past few months they have faced adversity due to the challenges of COVID-19 as well as staff transitions. Many of them set up home offices and worked remotely through daily conference calls and meetings. Through it all they continued to work together to ensure that the resources you needed were delivered in a timely manner.

If you have not viewed the ASET staff roster lately, I encourage you to do so and meet the “team members” who support you and your career goals!

ASET Staff Members

Name: Ammanuel “Aman” Ayalew
Title: Marketing Manager
Education: Master of Arts, Communication

  1. Who inspires you, and why? Rory Sutherland, vice chairman of Ogilvy Group, is one of my biggest inspirations. His marketing models, rooted in behavioral economics, show how most problems can be solved by tinkering with perception instead of changing reality, which requires more resources. In contrast to the popular belief that equates marketing to consumerism, he proved how the discipline could promote the use of limited resources to add value and create a greater appreciation for the materials and simple pleasures we take for granted. Beyond work, I use his principles as a guide to making sound decisions in life.

  2. Where are you from? I was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, thirteen months of sunshine — yes, we literally have thirteen months.
  3. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what are their names? I don’t have any but want to adopt a Golden-doodle one day.

  4. What show did you binge watch or listen to during the Covid-19 pandemic? I only binge-watched Dead to Me, which became my second-favorite show next to Breaking Bad. I mostly binged on podcasts since I can listen to them while I go about my day. The TroubleEvery Little ThingFreakonomics, and Hidden Brain were my top quarantine podcasts.

  5. Favorite Sport? Basketball is my favorite sport. I played for Governors State University, where I received an athletic scholarship. We played in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). I root for the Lakers — or should I say, LeBron James.

  6. What is your favorite city that you’ve visited, and why? Toronto, Ontario (in the summer) is one of my favorite cities. It’s culturally diverse and has an endless list of things-to-do. The people are incredibly friendly. I still keep in touch with total strangers (back-then) I met at different places. Plus, it has an extensive public transit, which makes it convenient to go from point A to B. I try to visit there every summer.

  7. Favorite pizza topping? I don’t think it’s fair to ask me to choose between pepperoni and bacon. 🙂

Name: Kevin Helm
Title: Executive Director
Education: Masters

  1. Who inspires you, and why?  My wife – she’s my rock and invaluable counselor.  Her dedication to our family is inspirational and her pragmatic approach to life is reassuring in a world filled with so many distractions.  And as a bonus, she laughs at most of my jokes!

  2. Where are you from? Raytown, Missouri (yup – home of Mama’s Family!)

  3. On the weekends and in your free time, what is your favorite hobby? Mountain biking – it’s a love affair.  Kansas City, maybe surprisingly, has a fantastic network of trails and volunteers and we’re only three hours away from North West Arkansas which has become a Midwest mountain biking mecca.  There’s nothing like it – it’s an ultimate stress reliever being out in the woods while experiencing an amazing physical and mental challenge.

  4. Who do people say you look like? My sister has always claimed I look like Al Bundy, but I think I look more like Tom Cruise 😉

  5. What is the most courageous thing you’ve done? I rode a motorcycle across the western half of the United States over a course of 17 days – I followed the same path taken by Robert Pirsig in Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

  6. Favorite restaurant or meal? There’s a great little restaurant in my town call Third Street Social – they have a slow roasted prime rib sandwich that’s delicious.

  7. Favorite time of year?  Fall – I love the moderate and cooling temperatures as well as the colors of the leaves as they are changing.

Please join us in welcoming Kevin and Aman to ASET and the Neurodiagnostic community!
